AI LIMIT
If this game were an anime with a typically long and weird title, something like “How I learned to parry in soulslikes and started enjoying it” would be perfect. This, by the way, very accurately conveys my feelings about the debut project of the Chinese studio Sense Games. Now I’ll tell you why.

First — not about mechanics, but about emotions. AI LIMIT catches your attention at first sight. Yes, the graphics here are not at the level of AAA blockbusters, but the style is simply breathtaking. The artists clearly tried: in some places the game looks like an art illustration come to life. And the combination of an anime girl in a revealing outfit and harsh post-apocalyptic landscapes immediately evokes flashbacks from NieR: Automata. Although the developers themselves refer to Mad Max, Borderlands, BioShock, Fallout and Metro Exodus, NieR’s inspiration can still be read between the lines.
The main character is called Arissa. And, as usual, she is not quite human. Arissa is a representative of the mysterious caste of Blades, created by unknown technologies. They are the last ones who can contain the infection called Dirt and the monsters that flooded the world after the global collapse. Civilization has fallen, leaving only one last city, Heavenswell, where the survivors cling to life. Like the androids in NieR, the Blades do not die completely. They can be “restarted” with the help of strange structures called Branches. But there is a nuance – now Arissa will have to not only survive, but also repair these very Branches, because without them her people are doomed.
Although the game evokes associations with the creation of Yoko Taro, it goes its own way. There is no android boy with sad eyes, no cute drone companions, no fourth-wall-breaking philosophy or outright anguish. But Arissa’s story is still captivating. It all seems banal at first, but as the game progresses, the heroine restores not only the Branches, but also her own memories. And then one day she remembers how someone was dragging her somewhere … but the face is not visible. Who is it? Why?
And where did the girl Arissa befriended at the camp disappear to? Who is this strange man who threatened to kill her if she “becomes like him”?.. The answers come slowly, in measured doses. But when they come, they hit you right in the heart. Almost every dialogue and every meeting is memorable, even if they happen infrequently. AI LIMIT knows how to build up the atmosphere and keep the intrigue.

Why AI LIMIT’s Game Design Works Just as Well as Dark Souls
Besides everything else, the game has excellent direction and cool dynamics – something is happening all the time. Sometimes huge barrels fall from above, and you dodge in panic so as not to become a pancake. Sometimes you have to rush through open terrain under the sights of a sniper sitting somewhere high up – and at the same time you think: “No way, bastard, I’ll get you.” Or you come across a fierce battle between different types of enemies, and then a dilemma arises: get involved and arrange a massacre under the noise, or rush past while the shooters distract each other (yes, again under fire – where else).
If you decide to thoughtfully study the maps, even more pleasant surprises await you. And doing this is not only useful, but also really interesting. The locations seem to be standard for the genre, but at the same time each of them is made with love for detail. Here are the types of places you will encounter most often:
- abandoned industrial complexes with labyrinths of rusty pipes and containers,
- ruined city blocks with gloomy courtyards and boarded up doors,
- gray deserted streets with a hint of a former life,
- half-collapsed highways with overturned cars hanging over cliffs.
But even in such seemingly familiar scenery, many secrets are hidden. The levels are well designed – you can almost always find secret paths, secluded corners or unexpected bypasses. And each find is like a small adventure.
And we are not talking about the banal “turned the corner – found a first aid kit.” Sometimes the game surprises. For example, once I came across a strange girl – beautiful, silent. At first she ignored me, but then suddenly handed over an artifact that turned out to be useful for leveling up. Another time, I wandered onto a destroyed highway, killed a bunch of strange creatures there, but did not find a passage forward. But, returning, I noticed a dying man among the wrecked cars – he gave a side quest. No rewards, but a piece of lore that made the world a little more alive and deeper.
And so, against the background of many “soulslikes”, where you just walk along dull corridors, collecting consumables and killing monsters, AI LIMIT stands out. Here, everything is richer, more atmospheric, and the world is more “alive”. Like in games from FromSoftware: you don’t read kilometers of text, but just watch, listen, observe – and put together a picture yourself. Everything works for immersion. And this is, damn it, cool.
AI LIMIT Gameplay: How the Synchronization System Works and Why There’s No Stamina
If we talk about the gameplay basis, then parallels with classic Souls-like games in AI LIMIT are noticeable literally from the first minutes. There are also some analogues of fires here – they are called Branches. It is near them that the hero is saved, spends accumulated resources on pumping and returns here after death. Instead of souls – crystals that fall from defeated enemies. For them, you can improve the characteristics of the character and pump up equipment. In general, it sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
But despite such familiar elements, AI LIMIT cannot be called a direct clone of Souls games. It feels noticeably easier, more accessible, in places even more casual. One of the key reasons for this difference is that the game completely lacks the usual mechanics of endurance. Here you do not need to keep track of how many times you hit with a sword or how many rolls you made – the hero can tirelessly attack, dodge and use enhanced techniques. This makes the fight more dynamic and forgiving, especially for beginners.
However, another system has replaced stamina – the synchronization scale. And you need to know how to handle it. This scale is spent when using special skills that are tied to weapons, as well as when using spells that Arissa releases from her left hand. Interestingly, the synchronization scale also decreases when the character takes damage. But it is restored only by active actions – when we ourselves attack enemies or use special items that restore synchronization.
Here comes the interesting part. If the scale is filled almost to the maximum, we inflict increased damage. But if it is halfway down, the power of normal and enhanced attacks drops, and many abilities simply become unavailable. If synchronization is brought to a critical level – almost to zero – Arissa loses combat effectiveness: she cannot raise a shield or weapon, becomes vulnerable and most often dies in just a couple of hits, even if she has a full supply of health. This adds depth and tension to battles, because it is important not only to survive, but also to constantly maintain a combat rhythm, so as not to turn into an easy target. It is especially worth noting that even a shield block here uses up synchronization. That is, you cannot simply “hold down the block” – defense becomes as meaningful a decision as an attack. This gives the combat system a strategic nature: you are always in a balance between risk and safety, between attack and defense.
The result is a unique hybrid system that combines elements of endurance and mana, but presented from a completely different angle. On the one hand, it does not limit us in ordinary actions – if you want, hit enemies as much as you want. On the other hand, it encourages us to actively combine basic attacks with skills in order to maintain a high level of synchronization and not lose strength. You can’t just mindlessly click on enemies here: even the simplest enemies can punish you for carelessness, and in boss battles without proper timing, blocks, parrying, and precise activation of abilities, there’s nothing to do.
AI LIMIT doesn’t strive to be a new “Dark Souls”, but it takes the best elements of the genre and rethinks them in a more accessible, dynamic, and spectacular form. This is its main difference and, perhaps, its main advantage.
Combat in AI LIMIT: How Parrying Works and Why Synchronization Is Necessary
Perhaps it’s time to talk about the main pleasure I got from AI LIMIT – parrying. For a person who is almost 50 years old, whose reaction is not so brilliant (except when it comes to women and a couple of favorite drinks), this game is a real find. Unlike many soulslikes, here parrying is not only easier, but also more interesting. Enemies attack fairly, predictably – without sophisticated tricks with hitboxes. Thanks to this, AI LIMIT can be considered an excellent simulator for training reaction and timing.
But it’s too early to relax. Bosses will not forever repeat the same attack that you already catch with your eyes closed. They can easily change their fighting style, forcing you to quickly rebuild. Sometimes you have to forget about parrying and urgently take out your shield – they start attacking with such speed that reacting to this is as difficult for me as swapping Metallica for Megadeth (well, you get the idea).
The synchronization mechanics are worth mentioning separately. Its presence added new parameters to the game. For example, “stability” reduces the loss of synchronization when taking damage, and “conversion” increases the restoration of the scale when you hit enemies. Another interesting idea is related to the analogue of souls: after each boss, you get a certain “core”, which determines how many crystals you will receive for kills, how much synchronization you will restore when collecting them – and how many “souls” you will lose when you die. The good news is that you do not need to return to the place of death for them. The system simply writes off some resources automatically. On the one hand, yes, this is a relief, but on the other hand, it eliminates unnecessary routine. You can focus on combat and progression, and not on running around the same locations. Although, if you want to grind or get rare resources, you can always go back through the Branches. Fortunately, there is a lot of equipment here – and this, in my opinion, is another big plus.
Is AI LIMIT worth playing?
AI LIMIT is not just another representative of the action RPG genre in the spirit of soulslikes. This is a project that surprises with its balance: it is accessible for beginners and deep enough for experienced players. From the very first minutes, the game sets a dark but stylish atmosphere, and as you progress, it constantly throws up reasons for interest – be it intense battles, unexpected plot twists or new unexplored corners of the world. What is especially nice is that AI LIMIT does not slide into either excessive casual or outright brutality, where each enemy is a potential source of pain and suffering. Instead, the game offers a “golden mean” – that very feeling when each battle requires attention and concentration, but does not turn into an endless series of failures and overload.
The battles themselves feel dynamic, varied and well-staged. And thanks to a successful leveling system and interesting mechanics, you can adapt the game style to yourself – whether you want to attack head-on, or carefully wait for the right moment. Experiments are encouraged, and the variety of equipment and skills only contributes to this. The game world also deserves praise. The locations are not just beautiful – they are organically integrated into the narrative, logically connected with each other and encourage exploration. Here you often want to deviate from the main route simply because somewhere in the distance you can see something intriguing. And most often – for good reason.
But what spoils the overall impression a little is the camera work. In normal situations, it behaves tolerably, but as soon as an active fight begins and the target is captured, the camera sometimes loses orientation. This is especially noticeable in narrow spaces or with a large crowd of enemies – you can lose your overview, which is critical in such genres. This is not a critical problem, but noticeable.
Pros of AI LIMIT:
- A well-thought-out and atmospheric world that you really want to dive into and explore;
- An interesting plot with elements of surprise and dark intrigue;
- Gameplay balance – ideal for both beginners and experienced players: there is a challenge, but no hopeless pain;
- Various combat mechanics and upgrade systems that allow you to flexibly customize your game style;
- Excellent visual style – the game looks stylish, modern and even unique in some ways;
- The locations are well-designed – they are not only beautiful, but also logically connected to the world and the plot.
Cons:
- The camera in battle sometimes fails – especially when fixated on the enemy, which can be annoying and disruptive.
