While it may seem difficult to create a cohesive experience from these diverse elements, the developers have done a commendable job of combining them into a satisfying whole.

However, there is a noticeable dissonance – one aspect of the game seems ideal for co-op play with friends, while another is best tackled alone, resulting in a divided experience that can be both rewarding and frustrating. The platforming element gives fans nostalgic memories of games like The Lost Vikings, Trine, and other similar titles where a group of characters with different abilities move from one side of the screen to the other. Initially, players control only two heroes – engineer Bart and his resourceful granddaughter Clu. The older hero demonstrates an enviable dexterity in handling tools, confidently acting in close combat – this is where his rich life experience is most evident. In contrast, the young companion skillfully handles a rifle, allowing her to accurately hit opponents at a distance. At this stage of the story, players are faced with fascinating logical tests – for example, gates built in a chain, whose opening or closing directly depends on the activation of nearby switches.

The gameplay allows you to instantly change the controlled character, which opens up space for tactical decisions. It is also possible to give orders to a partner – for example, to stay in position – which gives the interaction a team depth. As the story develops, new heroes join the duo, each of whom brings with them not only original skills, but also a fresh perspective on what is happening, which gives the puzzles additional multi-layeredness. The game map is filled with colorfully decorated gates that only certain characters can pass through, adding strategic variety. For example, only Bart can pass through yellow barriers, giving players the opportunity for subtle cooperation. Consequently, he must tackle all the challenges that lie ahead on his own, navigating through a world filled with obstacles and mysteries. Throughout his journey, the player gathers rare resources that prove useful in a variety of situations. For example, a character named Kaim creatively makes torches from mushrooms, utilizing their bioluminescent properties, while projectiles soaring through the flames ignite their targets with impressive effect. Meanwhile, Klue ingeniously concocts bombs from vibrant flowers, using their explosive potential to demolish stone blocks that obstruct the path below.

If we assess Aegis Defenders solely as a platformer, it doesn’t present anything particularly innovative or fresh. There are several annoying issues, such as the uncertainty over which platforms are indeed jumpable and which are not, leading to moments of frustration. At times, it feels as if an object is “blurred” and set in the background, but in fact, it operates just like the nearby platform, which can confuse players and disrupt the flow of gameplay. The shooting mechanics can feel a bit clunky and limited—Klu is only able to shoot either straight ahead or diagonally upward. This design choice complicates battles against flying enemies, making them quite challenging. It becomes especially frustrating when you find yourself standing on a tiny island, trying to avoid spikes while jumping around frantically and aiming at some peculiar bird. On the bright side, the puzzles are engaging, and switching between team members adds a layer of strategy. It’s particularly enjoyable when you’re on the hunt for collectibles, as these can lead to valuable bonuses at the end of each level.

There will be no mercy

Within seconds, the heroes find themselves surrounded by a mysterious artifact or a mysterious character, engaged in a lively dialogue and intense preparation to repel an inexorable enemy attack. The player has only one minute to quickly gather scattered resources and build reliable fortifications that can ensure the safety of the team. Clu, using only two colors, masterfully forms sharp spikes, and Grandpa, with amazing skill, builds a tower using only two stone blocks – his resourcefulness knows no bounds. Heroes can combine their buildings, creating more powerful and profitable structures, strengthening the defense of the entire group. With the arrival of new allies, the possibilities of inventions rapidly increase, opening up space for fresh tactical solutions. When the enemy wave is defeated, the timer is reset again, and resources magically return to their original positions – the game goes to the next cycle. This dynamic process keeps players on their toes, sparking their imagination and requiring coordinated interaction as they eagerly prepare for the next wave of challenges.

Aegis Defenders encounters several challenges that can make gameplay frustrating. In solo mode, the timer remains unchanged, forcing players to rush around the map, memorizing the locations of stones, mushrooms, and various other resources. This frantic search often leads to a scramble to place everything before time runs out, with many players completing tasks at the very last moment. Initially, this isn’t overly difficult, but as you progress to new missions, you’ll face increasingly dangerous enemies, and the areas you need to navigate become larger and more complex. Additionally, you must repair damaged fortifications, which adds another layer of urgency. For instance, if the spikes become damaged during a battle, you’ll have to hammer them back into shape for several seconds, which takes away valuable time that could be spent fending off enemies or gathering resources. Your companions, unfortunately, prove to be completely ineffective when playing solo. To make them act at all, you have to manually position them in specific spots on the map. If you want Bart to guard the upper platform, you must send him there and essentially leave him to his own devices. This lack of autonomy in your companions can make the experience feel more isolating, as you’re left to manage everything on your own.

He won’t bother to repair turrets or anything else unless he’s right next to them. During one particular mission, we had to defend an object using the cannons located nearby, but my partner didn’t even think to take his position until I literally put him there myself. Even after that, he remained just as ineffective—shooting at walls and hitting enemies only by sheer luck, which was frustrating to witness. Despite these shortcomings, the tower defense gameplay here isn’t a complete disaster. Players receive clear warnings about which directions the enemies will attack from, which adds a strategic element. Different characters inflict either minimal or substantial damage based on color coordination—Klu, for instance, excels at taking down blue creatures, making him valuable in specific situations. Initially, large red slugs create numerous challenges, but as the game progresses, they become easier to manage, allowing players to develop better strategies.

Yet, micromanagement becomes significantly trickier in the later stages, demanding players to monitor far more intricate details. Within just 60 seconds, you not only need to gather essential resources but also determine the best structures to create and strategically position your teammates for maximum effectiveness. When danger looms on the horizon, panic begins to set in, and you frantically switch to a companion, racing over to that massive creature of the right color in a desperate attempt to take it down swiftly before it wreaks havoc. Your base has limited “lives” (with bonus lives typically discovered during the initial part of the mission), and facing failure means restarting all waves from scratch. Additionally, some islands can collapse unexpectedly, while certain areas outright prohibit building, adding to the challenge. At times, you must also activate levers and skillfully navigate moving platforms to progress. Often, a mere minute feels woefully insufficient for all these demanding tasks, leaving you constantly on edge.

This episode evokes those moments in co-op games when you suddenly realize that controlling two characters at the same time is not a feat, but torture. In Aegis Defenders, such situations occur with surprising regularity: you find yourself desperately juggling two gamepads, trying to complete at least one task, all the while experiencing an uneasy feeling that you are missing something important or playing “not according to plan.”

Furthermore, the plot does not inspire much enthusiasm. A pair of archaeologists-explorers, hunting for relics of a vanished civilization, come across an ancient weapon called Aegis. As they delve deeper, they learn of a myth about fallen gods and are forced to defend their discovery from all sorts of misfortunes. Although the dialogue is written with attention to detail and shows potential depth, the story itself and its delivery suffer from an excessive overload of terms and abstract names. This makes the narrative cumbersome and unable to hold the player’s interest.

In Aegis Defenders, the cooperative gameplay truly elevates the experience. Solving puzzles becomes not only more enjoyable but also feels more rewarding, while protecting objectives is significantly less stressful. After all, being responsible for half the tasks is definitely more satisfying than frantically running from corner to corner and trying to keep everything in your head. This design means you won’t frequently find yourself failing missions and needing to replay them. However, it’s important to reiterate that the game lacks a comprehensive online co-op mode—players are limited to either local split-screen or Share Play on consoles.

If you happen to have a friend who’s enthusiastic about diving into Aegis Defenders with you, you might find it easy to elevate your rating to “impressive.” However, considering that many players likely prefer to enjoy such games solo, I’ll have to settle on calling it “average”—the game can feel quite unwelcoming and challenging for those who venture out on their own. Finding enjoyment in the experience may depend on having a partner to share the journey with, making it a much more engaging adventure.
