So I intend to evaluate it as a standalone creation, appreciating its special qualities, rather than simply viewing it as a continuation of the film’s story.

A Plot in a Theme Park Simulator? Yes, it’s something no one anticipated or requested, yet it exists. Fans of the franchise will likely appreciate the classic soundtrack and beloved characters from their childhood. However, these characters mainly exist to introduce yet another quest. The inclusion of Dr. Ian Malcolm doesn’t enhance the experience either; his bold statements, like “Life will find a way,” often frustrate rather than enrich the game’s atmosphere.

The storytelling is somewhat predictable, but the unforeseen events driven by the plot effectively create tension and excitement. You are entrusted with managing Isla Matanceros, a vibrant setting filled with opportunities and challenges. As you advance, you’ll also have the chance to test your skills on four other islands, including Isla Nublar and Site B from the films, each with its unique challenges. The entire archipelago is known as “Las Cinco Muertes,” which translates to “The Five Deaths.” This ominous name suggests that danger lurks around every corner, and someone is definitely going to be dining today. This isn’t merely a spoiler; it’s a stark reality that adds to the thrill and intensity of the game.

Is it really raining?

Every island showcases its own distinct landscape, and as you explore, the weather becomes increasingly treacherous with each new destination. While the starting island may experience only a minor gust, on Isla Nublar, brace yourself for a tempest so fierce it would impress even the creators of high-budget blockbuster films.

The unpredictable shifts in weather patterns frequently present significant challenges. For instance, enclosures that are suddenly without power can no longer contain the rampaging dinosaurs. In truth, these ancient creatures aren’t significantly deterred by walls, even when electrified; they can only be temporarily held back by them, showcasing their sheer power.

As the dark clouds gather, it seems a storm is on the horizon, ready to unleash its fury and transform this already perilous environment into a scene of chaos and excitement…

The game’s main problem lies precisely here, especially for those players who want to control every little detail. There is simply no scenario in which everything unfolds perfectly and no one gets eaten. Sure, you can try to mitigate the chaos created by an enraged T-Rex by administering a hefty dose of tranquilizer. Despite your best efforts, casualties are bound to happen, and there’s nothing you can do to prevent them. While the movie’s plot was built around one unforeseen disaster in an otherwise safe park, there’s no sense of safety in Evolution.

Entertainment Analysis and Control

Random tasks from various departments within the park provide a fantastic opportunity to earn some extra income while adding variety to your day.

The park can be developed in three key areas: science, entertainment, and safety. Enhancing each area not only offers unique bonuses for upgrades but also shapes the overall experience for visitors. It’s entirely up to you to decide which path to pursue. For example, improving the science center unlocks exciting new dinosaur species, while boosting the safety center enables the creation of a robust containment or neutralization system for these extraordinary creatures.

As much as I respect dinosaurs and their fascinating history, I wouldn’t want to find myself anywhere near even the smallest one.

It’s disheartening that even the most straightforward tasks, like feeding, must be done manually. Initially, you might find this additional activity engaging and even a bit nostalgic, but after about five hours, it can devolve into an exhausting routine that feels endless. On the other hand, it’s refreshing to occasionally step away from the manager’s chair and take control of a helicopter or drive a security jeep. You even get the thrilling opportunity to shoot tranquilizers at dinosaurs to prevent them from harming themselves or unsuspecting park guests. My inner child truly celebrated after each exhilarating jeep chase of yet another runaway dino, bringing a rush of excitement and nostalgia.

This blend of responsibility and adventure makes every day in the park unique, reminding me that even in a world filled with ancient creatures, there’s always room for a little fun.

Growing a dinosaur wont be easy – you’ll have to find its remains

The Hammond Laboratory tirelessly dedicates its efforts day and night to benefit not only the park’s revenue but also the advancement of science in exciting new ways.

To bring the new “walking attraction” to life, its DNA must be thoroughly examined—and first, it needs to be unearthed from ancient grounds. You have a fully equipped research center at your command, from which you dispatch skilled paleontologists to the most remote corners of the globe. They excavate fossils with great care and occasionally stumble upon delightful treasures like fossilized ferns and precious metals. These remarkable discoveries can be sold for substantial sums, contributing significantly to the park’s resources.

The less damaged a dinosaur’s genome is, the higher the likelihood it will mature successfully and thrive in its environment. The “gaps” in the reptiles’ DNA can be conveniently filled with genes from other species, allowing for exciting possibilities in genetic engineering. A simple yet effective genetic modification system is set up for this very purpose. While it may not be strictly essential for the park’s overall success, if you’re crafting the ultimate predator, you might as well embrace the challenge fully and explore every avenue. After all, the more “attractions” that can devour their visitors, the greater the park’s profits will be, ensuring its future prosperity.

And keep in mind, there will always be a larger lizard lurking in the shadows…

Currently, the game showcases an impressive roster of forty-two species of reptiles, including the towering Tyrannosaurus rex, the swift and agile Velociraptor, and the recently popular Indoraptor that has captured audiences on the big screen. The developers are committed to continually expanding Evolution, which is quite atypical for promotional content and shows their dedication to enhancing the player experience.

Each dinosaur species comes with its own distinct set of behaviors, making the gameplay immersive and engaging. Two of the main traits to consider are “sociability” and “population,” with each species having specific critical values that dictate their interactions. The population scale reflects how a creature perceives its neighbors within the enclosure. For instance, the Ankylosaurus becomes noticeably distressed if confined with more than eight animals, showcasing its need for personal space. In contrast, the Struthiomimus thrives in social settings and harmonizes exceptionally well with a herd of Maiasaurs, demonstrating the importance of community for certain species. Sociability itself indicates how vital it is for these animals to coexist with their kind. The Tyrannosaurus, a formidable predator, is unwilling to share its territory with other members of its species, preferring solitude to maintain its dominance.

Frontier Developments dedicated over a year to perfecting the engine, allowing prehistoric reptiles to emerge in stunning realism and detail. And they truly achieved it. The predators feel so lifelike that we can observe them with intrigue while secretly being glad they are no longer roaming the Earth.

As for the modified dinosaurs, their behaviors can be quite unpredictable and often surprising. Curiously, you won’t discover a new pet’s unique traits until it’s released into the world. It’s like a game of chance, where anticipation builds. There’s a carnivorous beast leisurely grazing in the grass, reminiscent of a prehistoric “hippie,” blissfully unaware of its surroundings. Meanwhile, a modified herbivorous Brachiosaurus seems intent on smashing through walls and trampling tourists, leaving chaos in its wake.

Something broke here

…and suddenly I find myself pondering, “Hold on, isn’t Evolution a theme park management simulator? So why does the management aspect occupy only a fraction of the gameplay?” The game boldly asserts that it’s unlike any other. It’s not better, nor is it worse. Instead of the typical roller coasters, we have long-gone reptiles, which is a refreshing change. There’s no need to construct paths for visitors, budget their spending, or monitor their happiness levels meticulously.

Perhaps that’s a good thing. Guests consistently generate revenue, regardless of how much effort you put into their experience. If you find yourself half a million short after erecting another power plant, you can always build a couple of cafés and souvenir shops. This way, that budget hole will gradually mend itself, allowing you to focus on what really matters.

The emphasis is clearly on creating enclosures and breeding new dinosaurs, which is precisely how it should be in a game dedicated to these magnificent creatures. Let’s be honest, it would be strange to craft a game in the Jurassic Park universe and devote less time to bonding with prehistoric pets than to managing the infamous visitors. Engaging with these ancient beings brings a unique thrill and a sense of wonder that no amount of guest management can replicate.

After a couple of hours of play, the initial excitement begins to fade. You’re no longer obsessed with dinosaurs; instead, you’re fixated on getting the next prestige star so you can finally move on to the next island. It’s vital for a theme park management sim to keep the grind fresh and special! A third of my play time was spent terraforming the island, another third focused on finding and breeding new species, and the remaining hours were spent fighting for the nearly impossible fifth star.

Jurassic World Evolution gets a big thumbs up because it stands out from other games in its genre. On the one hand, all the fantastic concepts here are dealt with by design inconsistencies that can be annoying. However, I can’t think of any recent movie-based games that are as beautiful and interesting as this one. The attention to detail in the environments and dinosaur behavior adds a layer of realism that’s hard to ignore. Plus, the last time we got to “control” Jurassic Park was in Jurassic World: Operation Genesis – hard to believe that was fifteen years ago! It’s a nostalgic reminder of how much has changed in gaming since then.

After the release, the developers did not leave the project without a look – they continue to release patches that improve artificial intelligence and interface. I am sure that in the near future new cosmetic items and types of dinosaurs will appear. But for now – we have what we have.

Jurassic World Evolution verdict

If you’re not a dinosaur fanatic and are simply looking for a decent economic simulator, you’ll probably give it a seven. But if, like me, you can’t resist the charisma of these prehistoric beasts, you can easily give the game an eight – or even more. It all comes down to how much you appreciate the grandiose and fascinating mythology of Jurassic Park.
